16A –What’s Your Secret Sauce?

Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique.
·       Determined – Every task put before me, I will complete. It will bother me if I do not complete something especially if I am passionate about it
·       Compassionate – I have a lot of empathy for others. I feel the need to do for others when they are in need.
·       Sense of humor – It is important to laugh, even at yourself. I try to find the humor in every situation good or bad. This quality really eases my anxiety and others.
·       Admit my mistakes – Blaming others for my mistakes or not owning up to my mistakes is not going to prepare me well for my future. This allows me to focus on myself for the future and better myself.
·       Listener – I feel being an ACTIVE listener is sooo important to learning and growing as a person.
Interview the five people who know you the best
·       Interview #1: She saw me as driven to accomplish goals. Felt we had a really strong emotional connection and says she sees kind of interaction with most of my friends.
o   I feel like I do try to be connected to people on an emotional level because that is one of the only ways to truly know someone. I also find a mental connection through this.
·       Interview #2: My boss says he hired me because I was interested and passionate about learning through the job and meeting new people. Found me very knowledgeable about things on my resume and aspects of the company intricacies.
o   It pays to be dedicated, especially in this situation. From this I took that I need to be dedicated to my work at all times. Things like this motivate me even more.
·       Interview #3: A friend finds me “humorous and smart.” “You sit quietly listening to everyone deliberate and then step in with what you know in parallel to everyone else’s ideas. You are great at getting a group of people to decide on one thing.”
o   I did not think of this aspect of myself when creating the list above. It is an interesting attribute.
·       Interview #4: “I was really impressed by your knowledge of mental health and your interest in helping others. You are interested in a topic that is quite controversial at times. I find it admirable that you stick to what you believe in and do not let others pull you from that. You were accepting of what I say when communicating back and forth and try to build off my ideas when we are configuring projects.”
o   This interview was done by email. This response impacted me the most because of how I feel she views me. People view me better than I do.
·       Interview #5: One of my mentors describes me as “meek, but mighty.” She sees me as someone very quiet and shy. She says but when I get around people I know or knowledge I am interested in, I become focal about what I think and ideas I have.
o   I do find myself shy at times. This is something I am really working on as there is no reason to be shy around people.
Reflect on the differences
·       How I see myself is about the same as other people do. However, I believe other people gave their responses based on how I interact with others more than anything else. Perspectives and environments are what defines people’s thoughts about you. I think what my interviewees said about me is pretty accurate. I think the above list is okay, but some characteristics can be added.

  1. Hayley-
I enjoyed reading your qualities. I personally feel that I have lost a lot of empathy recently within my current line of work; healthcare. Reading your post, does help me realize how important empathy is, especially when taking care of patients. It has been a constant struggle, but I am working to change my outlook and put more focus into the patient rather than the business. We definitely share some of the same qualities as well, in terms of accepting responsibility for our actions. I believe that is an extremely important quality because it allows us to make necessary changes at all times. When we are too busy blaming others, we never really give ourselves room for personal growth.

  2. Hi Hayley,
I really enjoyed reading your post. I though this assignment was so much fun and I really learned a lot about how I view myself and how others see me. I loved the qualities you listed. I never think of having a sense of humor as a quality, but it is indeed a very important one to have. I am also very passionate and determined. I feel these qualities are so important to have because one must be passionate about things they do or else they won’t give it their all and won’t care. Being determine is also extremely important and why you are so successful in everything you do. Your friends and family definitely see you the same way you see yourself. Great post!
