19A – Idea Napkin No. 2

You. Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?

Hi. I’m Hayley. I believe I am a really talented cook (I actually wanted to go to culinary school right out of high school, but college first seemed like a better idea). I am passionate about lifting other people through food and talking to them. At some point, I hope to be a chef at my own restaurant (way in the future). I feel the need to help others is present in the business idea, as I want to create a comfortable place for people to get help. This business would become the focus in life because of how passionate I would be about it.

What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).

I am offering customers a way to get help without any direct contact. Ultimately, I am making it easier for people because it is something that will be right at their fingertips. Their unmet need is not having the will or ability to actually go seek help, and the app meets this need.

Who are you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?

My customers will be a younger generation, as the older generations are usually the ones who have poor attitudes towards mental health. However, adults could be the main users because they are too uncomfortable about their mental health issue and going to see a psychologist. This offers them a way to “secretly” get help. According to NAMI, “50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24.” It will accommodate those people who cannot connect with other individuals, or their family as easy as they would with a psychologist.

Why do they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will actually pay you money to use your product or service.

People will pay to not be “humiliated.” (You should not feel humiliated to go see a doctor, but this is what others may feel.) People will pay for comfort. Just like people will pay for a more expensive couch because it feels “softer” or more “firm.” The app is also convenient to the everyday busy person, who might only have odd times of the day to tend to their mental health.

What are your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else? Also: what do you have that nobody else has

I like to believe I am an analytical thinker, especially about things I really care about or interested in. This product is different from many others because psychologists are at people’s finger tips and allows comfort and convenience.

Conclusion of 5 Elements

These elements fit together. It was difficult finding demographics of people that would use the app, but I made an educated guess from the research I did. A lot of surveys that people take about this topic are not always completely honest, so I feel like the results are not always fully accurate.

Feedback memo

I did not receive a lot of feedback on my previous napkin post. However, Natalie felt my app would be beneficial to those who hate going to the doctor or to ask for help. She feels the app would make people more willing to. I did elaborate more on that part. I also elaborated on what I was providing to customers and making more clear the needs that are unmet.

18A – Create a Customer Avatar

My individual is an 18-year-old male from Peachtree City, Georgia. He has kept to himself all his life and dealt with any issues he had by himself. His family never brought up mental health. Although, many in his family suffered with poor mental health, they saw mental health as a failure. The family saw going to the doctor as defeat and ruining their pristine image.
He has started his first year at the University of Florida. A new town. A new scene. He is homesick and is having a hard time with depression. He does not feel he can talk to his family. He also does not have any close friends, yet, that he can talk with. The stress of all the assignments is really starting to take its toll on him. He finds himself sleeping a lot and not leaving his dorm room.
He has never really made his own doctors appointments and does not know about the campus resources regarding what he is experiencing.
My Avatar:

I am from the same city as my avatar and I am aware of how people interact there. Mental health was never really talked about in my family openly, but some did go to see a psychologist to get help. The problems were not ignored. They were just not talked about with family.

16A –What’s Your Secret Sauce?

Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique.
·       Determined – Every task put before me, I will complete. It will bother me if I do not complete something especially if I am passionate about it
·       Compassionate – I have a lot of empathy for others. I feel the need to do for others when they are in need.
·       Sense of humor – It is important to laugh, even at yourself. I try to find the humor in every situation good or bad. This quality really eases my anxiety and others.
·       Admit my mistakes – Blaming others for my mistakes or not owning up to my mistakes is not going to prepare me well for my future. This allows me to focus on myself for the future and better myself.
·       Listener – I feel being an ACTIVE listener is sooo important to learning and growing as a person.
Interview the five people who know you the best
·       Interview #1: She saw me as driven to accomplish goals. Felt we had a really strong emotional connection and says she sees kind of interaction with most of my friends.
o   I feel like I do try to be connected to people on an emotional level because that is one of the only ways to truly know someone. I also find a mental connection through this.
·       Interview #2: My boss says he hired me because I was interested and passionate about learning through the job and meeting new people. Found me very knowledgeable about things on my resume and aspects of the company intricacies.
o   It pays to be dedicated, especially in this situation. From this I took that I need to be dedicated to my work at all times. Things like this motivate me even more.
·       Interview #3: A friend finds me “humorous and smart.” “You sit quietly listening to everyone deliberate and then step in with what you know in parallel to everyone else’s ideas. You are great at getting a group of people to decide on one thing.”
o   I did not think of this aspect of myself when creating the list above. It is an interesting attribute.
·       Interview #4: “I was really impressed by your knowledge of mental health and your interest in helping others. You are interested in a topic that is quite controversial at times. I find it admirable that you stick to what you believe in and do not let others pull you from that. You were accepting of what I say when communicating back and forth and try to build off my ideas when we are configuring projects.”
o   This interview was done by email. This response impacted me the most because of how I feel she views me. People view me better than I do.
·       Interview #5: One of my mentors describes me as “meek, but mighty.” She sees me as someone very quiet and shy. She says but when I get around people I know or knowledge I am interested in, I become focal about what I think and ideas I have.
o   I do find myself shy at times. This is something I am really working on as there is no reason to be shy around people.
Reflect on the differences
·       How I see myself is about the same as other people do. However, I believe other people gave their responses based on how I interact with others more than anything else. Perspectives and environments are what defines people’s thoughts about you. I think what my interviewees said about me is pretty accurate. I think the above list is okay, but some characteristics can be added.

15A – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

Based on my 3 interviews:

Begin with alternative evaluation.

·My segment of males and females, ages 16-21, will want a product for the least amount they can get it at the right quality. My male interviewee (20) believes that in terms of this app people will be looking at the price, as they expect it to be because it is an app. He thinks as long as they are getting the help they need, people will not be too into style. Just needs to be functional.

How/where do they buy?

·This segment will buy more online according to my interviews. I feel like online shopping is becoming more popular than ever in many segments. Rebecca says she shops more online than anything else, as long as she knows her size for the store first. This is good because my app is completely online based.

Post-purchase evaluation.

·When discussing post-purchase aspects with my last interviewee, she determines if something is good if it accommodates her needs at the time. She also is more satisfied with a purchase if she can use it more than once. She deems something a “bad purchase” if it does not perform how she expected or did not fulfill her needs.

Report the findings. Draw conclusions.

·My interviews were not very lengthy for this task due to my narrow questions. However, I was able to gather all the information I needed. Their buying habits mainly focused on online shopping and they were very willing to write a review if they did not like they service or product received. They pick stores and apps based on ratings by other people. This would be very important when marketing my app.
·This segment is very conscious of what they buy and how they spend their money. A lot of this segment is starting a life and trying to save money, so they try to keep their extra expenses low. If they are unsatisfied with a purchase they are likely to return the product or complain about the service.

14A – Halfway Reflection

1)    Tenaciousness is a competency. What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?
·       I have kept a routine when keeping up with the workload of this class and others, my internship, and of course family. I have really had to work at my time management skills. I really do not want to be working on school work on Friday nights during the summer.
2)    Tenaciousness is also about attitude. Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this?
·       I felt like giving up many times when developing my app. The most daunting task was recording myself for the pitch. I am not very good at public speaking or organizing my thoughts for something to under 90 seconds. I really felt like giving up then. I did it because I knew I had and it would develop my skills.
·       I have had a more tenacious attitude with this class. I think I started developing this attitude when Professor Pryor told us a girl was able to use her pitch to land a job.
3)    Three tips. What are three tips you would offer next semester's student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing the 'tenacious mindset' ?
·       Be dedicated to the class and put in effort. This class is very well rounded in developing many business skills.
·       DO NOT wait until the last minute. Your peers will likely be able to notice.
·       Have a plan every week of when you want to complete tasks for the class. Plans are essential for success in this class. Link a business plan or model.

12A – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

The segment I have chosen young people ages 16-21. This segment was most accessible to me for interviewing, and I believe this age group would be most likely to use the application.
When interviewing my three people, I noticed the consistency of them wanting to use this app mostly in the evening or at night. This was there cool down time from all that they did. They also said that this would be the only time they would get to themselves. The oldest I interviewed, Tasha, works a full-time job and goes to school. She feels the only time she would have time for this is in the middle of the night.

The three I interviewed know they has a mental health problem but have never had the time or will to search for help. Sydney brought up that she has heard of an app like mine but read reviews and decided not to pursue. The app seemed to not be helpful to people and a waste of time. However, I could not easily find this app when I googled it.

Overall, I learned that this app will likely be used more for those who need to be assessed by a psychologist conveniently. Many just find it hard to make it to the psychologist, not that they are embarrassed. It will be beneficial to both needs.

This segment would likely not look up the app, but if it was presented in front of them or if they saw an ad, they may be interested. They would me more “monkey see, monkey do” users. Each person I interviewed was wanting to pay more attention to their mental health but did not know how or when.

13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

·       What surprised you the most?

    • Mary Kay followed her dream business and did not quit when her husband died right before the business opened and at the same time she was tending to her sick father. She had the support of her family to continue the business.

·       What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?

    • She believed in herself. She was able to follow her dreams as a single mom. She came home everyday at 7pm no matter how much work she needed to get done and talked little of the stressors she had at work at home. In other words, she left her stress at the office.

·       What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?

    • She suggests only giving one-word answers when someone asks, “how are you doing?” She believes that no one is actually looking for more than that. This may be true but giving a one-word answer continues the trend of the phrase “how are you” not being meaningful.

·       Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?

    • Mary Kay saw some failure in 1985 because of the stock exchange. She made the wrong decision. However, this made her keep her goals more flexible to achieve her ultimate dream.

·       What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?

    • She held to her dreams and beliefs. Her vision of success included 3 components: desire to succeed, know-how, and applying yourself. The fundamental principles of her business: (1) Golden Rules and the Go Give spirit, (2) philosophy of God 1st, family 2nd, career 3rd, and (3) praising people to success because of the belief that everyone had resident potential.

·        Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

o   Her logic about not telling her family a lot about what she was doing. Also, I was confused about her thought process behind only using one word to describe how she’s feeling.

·       If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?

o   What gave you the will power and determination to strive so deeply to accomplish your dream? In the book it does not touch very much on her background and why she wanted what she had so bad. Usually people have an interesting background when they are that determined.
o   Did you use many investors? There is no talk of investors and how she managed to start and keep the business going.

·       For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?

o   Mary Kay believed hard work was the only way to achieve goals. she did remind a few times to keep goals flexible as things do not always work out as planned. I agree with this.

9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who, What, Why

Finding those that do not have a need for the app was difficult.

Who

The first person I interviewed, Ashley, said she finds the idea very interesting, but would not use it. She already sees a psychologist and is not afraid of embracing her mental health. She does mention that sometimes the psychologist gets backed up with appointments and she is unable to see him for week. In this case, she may use it in an emergency. I also spoke with a 25-year-old boy who says that he has no problems with his mental health and could not see himself using it.

What

My fourth interview was with a man (by email), about 45, that does not think mental illness is a health issue and does not think the app is needed at all. He thinks that “everyone should be treated the same who have mental illness, that is not at all.” So, people who think a lot of help does not need to be provided. My fifth interviewee was a 54-year-old woman that sees no need for it herself but would definitely suggest it to her children and grandchildren. She states that when she was younger she needed it because in her family mental health was not talked about, and therefore a stigma was created. She now sees a psychiatrist.

Why

Karry emphasized that she does not need the application now but if she does see her mental health depleting she would definitely use the app. She would be too afraid to see a psychologist because she is unsure of how her family would react. Karry sees it as a great alternative.

Inside the boundary

Outside the boundary
Who is in
Those with mental illness
Who is not
Those unaffected by mental illness

Those that already see a doctor
What the need is
More incognito therapy use, or medication use.

Faster treatment.

Help.
What the need is not
People that think going to therapy or being on medication is not helpful.
Why the need exists
There is an overlying stigma on mental health.

Too much need for doctors and not enough of them.

People wanting help but being too scared to get it for fear others will know.
Alternative explanations
People get addicted to drugs, which caused their poor mental health. This then makes the stigma worse.

People do not have a phone to see the app.

8A – Solving The Problem

Hypothesis: A lot of Americans suffer from poor mental health because of genetics, brain damage and substance abuse.

The problem is that not enough people feel comfortable talking about their feeling or illness. They may not even know they have a mental illness. Something as simple as taking a quiz (everyone loves taking those online quizzes that tell them what zodiac sign would actually fit them is or what cartoon character they are). The quizzes would be just as exciting.

The solution I have for this problem is to develop an application for the phone or computer that allows people to answer questions. The answers will then be reviewed by a certified psychologist or psychiatrist. The doctors will give a simple diagnosis based on the results of the questions. If the doctor feels the person may need further assistance, they could recommend a local doctor. However, some patients will not feel comfortable with this and may want to video chat from the comfort of their own home. The doctors here can get a better understanding and diagnosis. The doctor then can choose to prescribe or not.

This app will allow those with a mental illness to receive help quicker and allow a patient to be more comfortable. I believe the base questions should be detailed and allow for much thought by the patient. These questions in itself could be beneficial to the patient and further assistance may not be needed.

At this time, there is a huge stigma surrounding mental health. If people are able to get help without anyone else knowing, they might be more likely to reach out for help.

7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Mental Health Analysis

Opportunity: A lot of Americans suffer from poor mental health because of genetics, brain damage and substance abuse.
              The who: Americans
The what: suffer from poor mental health
The why: genetics, brain damage and substance abuse

Testing the who: Not only Americans are suffering from mental health issues, a great majority of people around the world are.
Testing the what: Many people who have poor mental health are unaware of it and do not get treatment for it, whether that is seeing a psychologist or talking doses of medicine. This issue comes from the use of drugs, a brain injury, or chemical imbalances in the brain.
Testing the why: There are more causes of poor mental health than the ones listed in the hypothesis. I will include some more overarching ones here that will cover all the smaller causes. They are as follows: infections, brain defect, prenatal damage, poor nutrition, poor socialization, including lifestyle choices, abuse or neglect.

Interviews
              Interview #1:
This interview was done with a you male in college. When he first started college he felt fine and had never experienced or even discussed mental health before. So, when he felt changes in his mood, he had no idea what was going on. A friend told him to go see a psychologist, which he admits now that he was very embarrassed to do this. He now sees these symptoms in classmates and friends
              Interview #2:
I tried to find someone who feels they had never experienced poor mental health. This was quite hard, but I did. She is in her early 20s and has never experienced the feeling of poor mental health. No one, that she knows of, in her immediate family has experienced this. She feels her family is very positive about most things that happen in their lives. However, she has many friends that she sees go through phases of high depression and anxiety.
              Interview #3:
Middle-aged man, used drugs when he was younger. He feels his choices when he was young is the main cause of his depression then and now. He also has high anxiety. He feels the drugs held him back from what he should have been doing in that time in his life. His regrets overwhelm his life now and he takes medicine to keep his anxiety and depression down.
              Interview #4:
Psychologist. Young woman. She sees a lot of younger people than older people. She feels that the younger generations are not as embarrassed to go get help. She feels with the older generations there is still the stigma looming over mental health. She says, “it’s cooked into their brain to think people with mental health issues are just ‘psychos’.” She hates to see people suffer.
              Interview #5:
This interviewee is a close friend of mine. She likes to share her experiences with mental health to help others around her. She had trauma in her teen years that has impacted her mental health now and she struggles with bouts of depression because of it.

What I learned from the interviews…
·       I tried to keep my interviews very discussion based because many people find it hard to discuss this issue.
·       The psychologist (interviewee #4) really helped me pin point where the problem was when people have mental health issues that they do not take care of.
·       I found that some people just ignore their mental health thinking things will get better on their own.
·       My only open interviewee was one who experienced trauma (#5) and that is the cause of depression. Trauma victims are usually closed off.

6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Found: JP Morgan Chase
Opportunity: Natural disasters have destroyed areas all over the world recently. I will specifically talk about the rebuilding occurring in Florida and Texas. This is going to boost the construction sector through the next few years.
Prototypical customer: Construction workers and companies. People needing to rebuild
Exploit? This will be easy to exploit because the GDP, construction industry and people with damage from natural disasters are benefiting.
Why? I find this interesting because I currently live in an area that needs a little rebuilding and am seeing construction crews everywhere. There is not a lack of construction crews here in SW Florida.

Opportunity: The regulation of CO2 emissions is going to become one of the main focuses of the shipping industry. This comes from trying to develop world regulations and standards for the global industry. No specific regulation of this on the global realm, but this would be beneficial to all people as it would benefit the environment.
Prototypical customer: shipping industry, people receiving global shipments, and all people being impacted by the changes in the environment
Exploit? This would be easy to exploit; however, it will be hard to get the global shipping industry to agree on something unless there are incentives involved.
Why? I see this opportunity as global shipping becomes more common and the environment of the world see less positive changes.

Opportunity: This opportunity exists because people are working and receiving lower wages than they should be. With the low unemployment, wages should be higher than they are. This opportunity may exist because normal working Americans are not keeping up with the skills needed to keep up with the new jobs being created.
Prototypical customer: workers not receiving the wages that parallel with the trend of low unemployment.
Exploit? I believe this issue will be hard to exploit considering the people it is affecting.
Why? Living expenses in the area I live in are high and the people working in the area are not making enough money to support their family. I see this happening in my extended family and with friends.

Found: http://www.rasmussen.edu/degrees/health-sciences/blog/federal-healthcare-laws/
Opportunity: Insurance companies use two different reviews of a patient when they get treatment. Concurrent reviews happen while the patient is getting the treatment, and retrospective reviews happen after the patient gets the treatment. If the reviewer finds the patient did not really need a treatment they got, the insurance company can take back their payment. There are facts given about this opportunity.
Prototypical customer: Those who are customers of the insurance company.
Exploit? This will be easy to exploit because of the amount of insurance companies out there.
Why? I recently had a conversation with my aunt who is a Physician’s Assistant about this topic. I did not know that the insurance company could take back payment on a treatment you get, if they believe its not sufficient.

5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

Fort Myers Florida Weekly

My Dumbest Investment

The WebVan company marketed to the wrong audience according the author of the article. It marketed to 20-year-old males instead of working moms. From what I can gather, WebVan is an online grocery store that didn’t do very well.
This was a very exciting company for the market, as it was a brand-new idea. Investors put 800 million into the company, but in the first year the company only netted $200,000.
The investors of WebVan are the ones who have the problem now. The company filed for bankruptcy and went out of business. The investors put a lot of money into a “cool idea” without all the details sorted out.

Autonomous vehicles versus pedestrians and bicyclists

This article discusses sensory cars, or self-driving, and the effects on motorists. The back up cameras and sensors do help in reducing injuries and rear-end collisions. With moving forward with fully automatic cars, it could be putting drivers more at risk. Developers are rushing the idea. Local and federal governments have been laid back about testing the cars and has allowed them to be tested on public roads. The problem here is the testing on public roads because most research trials do not put humans at risk like this without an agreement established.
The company and local government have the problem here. If someone gets hurt, these two entities will be the first at fault due to their want and approval.

Demand for labor is up yet wages remain stagnant

As of the beginning of May, unemployment is at an all time low. However, the number of workers quitting their jobs to find new ones in rising. Many economists are confused because wages are not rising even though there is a labor shortage.
Some reasonings for this include…
·       Typical Americans looking for work are not trained for the new jobs being created today
·       Globalization of the labor pool. Technological advances cause this
·       Robotics and other technologies have taken over jobs. For example, consumers shopping online greatly decreases human workers.
·       Companies are giving more money to investors than employees. Executives are being rewarded for this.
The main problem here is the low income in the Fort Myers area because of new technologies and the lack of training in new skills. It is suggested that workers learn the new “in demand” skills. Also, people should become more flexible with what location they are in. That means being more willing to move for a job.

My watch is killing me

In this article the woman talks about her struggles with the Apple Watch and her “addiction” to it. She tells a story of how she wakes up to find how much she had slept and realizes that her battery is only half charged, and it could turn off at 2 p.m. She is immediately anxious that she will be lost the rest of the day without her Apple Watch.
With everything that the Apple Watch tracks, it makes her paranoid even through the data collected might not be completely accurate. She takes the data she is given and researches it on Google to find she has all these diseases (I think most of us do this).
The watch is cool. But it could make a person feel anxious or depressed depending on how the information the Apple Watch is giving to the user. The user had the problem in this aspect. Apple Watch will also see a problem when users do not buy the newer versions being put out because they feel anxious about it.

Palm Beach Daily News

Council breaks paid parking expansion

The Town Council is pushing the research for developing more paid parking the business district and oceanside blocks. It sis seen that there will be more parking turnover in the area, which will be good for customers and business in the area. This will also bring in over $800,000 more to the town a year. People do not want kiosks installed in the area, so everything would be done by phone, by calling or going to an app.
There is another option the town is considering, which is “free-but-timed parking.” A person can park for a certain amount of time for free before they must start paying for parking.
Businesses are concerned that paid parking will decrease the number of customers they get. People living in the area are upset they will have to pay for parking when they go shopping. This is unfair to residents. Other residents see this as a way to get better parking and have more available parking because of the turnover.

30A – Final Reflection

Experiences. In the beginning of this course it was really hard for me to talk about myself and find qualities to talk about. This is much...
