8A – Solving The Problem

Hypothesis: A lot of Americans suffer from poor mental health because of genetics, brain damage and substance abuse.

The problem is that not enough people feel comfortable talking about their feeling or illness. They may not even know they have a mental illness. Something as simple as taking a quiz (everyone loves taking those online quizzes that tell them what zodiac sign would actually fit them is or what cartoon character they are). The quizzes would be just as exciting.

The solution I have for this problem is to develop an application for the phone or computer that allows people to answer questions. The answers will then be reviewed by a certified psychologist or psychiatrist. The doctors will give a simple diagnosis based on the results of the questions. If the doctor feels the person may need further assistance, they could recommend a local doctor. However, some patients will not feel comfortable with this and may want to video chat from the comfort of their own home. The doctors here can get a better understanding and diagnosis. The doctor then can choose to prescribe or not.

This app will allow those with a mental illness to receive help quicker and allow a patient to be more comfortable. I believe the base questions should be detailed and allow for much thought by the patient. These questions in itself could be beneficial to the patient and further assistance may not be needed.

At this time, there is a huge stigma surrounding mental health. If people are able to get help without anyone else knowing, they might be more likely to reach out for help.

As someone who particularly enjoys taking personality and zodiac tests, I think this app can be a fun and interactive method for those who are too scared to discuss certain life issues. Also, I like that the quizzes will be monitored by Psychiatrist because they will getting help from a professional, and not someone who just wouldn’t be able to understand. My only concern with the app, is that if the patient needs further assistance and doesn’t have insurance or a way to seek medical help, the app is no longer useful to that person. Aside from that, I am intrigued and think the idea of an app is excellent, considering many people have cellphones these days and can access the app without issues.

  2. Hi Hayley,
This is a great idea and I could tell you put a lot of effort into your solution. With your app, people will be able to take the first step in getting the help they may need, but in a fun and exciting way. I really like that everyone’s answers to the quiz will be viewed by a certified psychologist or psychiatrist. I personally know a lot of people that would benefit from this app. People will feel way more comfortable going through this process and their anxiety would decrease tremendously. Great post!!!

  3. Hayley, this is a fantastic idea! Sadly, in today's culture we feel uncomfortable with talking about mental health. I think that it's changing for the better, but this app could definitely be an important tool for a lot of people. Being behind a screen makes it easier to open up and confront what you are feeling. I think this app sounds legitimate, with real doctors helping patients, and extremely convenient!
