Who, What, Why
Finding those that do not have a need for the app was
difficult.
Who
The first person I interviewed, Ashley, said she finds the idea
very interesting, but would not use it. She already sees a psychologist and is
not afraid of embracing her mental health. She does mention that sometimes the
psychologist gets backed up with appointments and she is unable to see him for
week. In this case, she may use it in an emergency. I also spoke with a 25-year-old
boy who says that he has no problems with his mental health and could not see
himself using it.
What
My fourth interview was with a man (by email), about 45,
that does not think mental illness is a health issue and does not think the app
is needed at all. He thinks that “everyone should be treated the same who have
mental illness, that is not at all.” So, people who think a lot of help does
not need to be provided. My fifth interviewee was a 54-year-old woman that sees
no need for it herself but would definitely suggest it to her children and
grandchildren. She states that when she was younger she needed it because in
her family mental health was not talked about, and therefore a stigma was
created. She now sees a psychiatrist.
Why
Karry emphasized that she does not need the application now
but if she does see her mental health depleting she would definitely use the
app. She would be too afraid to see a psychologist because she is unsure of how
her family would react. Karry sees it as a great alternative.

Inside the boundary
|
|
Outside the boundary
|
|
Who is in
|
Those with mental illness
|
Who is not
|
Those unaffected by mental illness
Those that already see a doctor
|
|
What the need is
|
More incognito therapy use, or medication use.
Faster treatment.
Help.
|
What the need is not
|
People that think going to therapy or being on medication is not
helpful.
|
|
Why the need exists
|
There is an overlying stigma on mental health.
Too much need for doctors and not enough of them.
People wanting help but being too scared to get it for fear others
will know.
|
Alternative explanations
|
People get addicted to drugs, which caused their poor mental health. This
then makes the stigma worse.
People do not have a phone to see the app.

Hi Hayley
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post, I can see how tough it must've been to identify who lies within and outside your boundary since mental health is something that everyone should care about. With mixed opinions on the effectiveness of sites like WebMD, many people are skeptical of online medical assistance and prefer the in-person care of a doctor. The biggest obstacle to overcome here will be in ensuring that the treatment and diagnoses provided are reliable and accurate.
Hayley-
ReplyDeleteLike you, I came across several people that don’t believe mental health is an issue. In fact, I was surprised at how insensitive some people were. I can definitely understand how these individuals fall outside of that boundary because they wouldn’t use it for themselves and may not refer other to do so either. On the other hand, I like that one of your interviewees mentioned that they would use it as an emergency. This means that she will always have access to help, even its not directly through her psychologist/psychiatrist.
Hi Hayley,
ReplyDeleteI can see how it must have been extremely hard to find people that don’t have the need for your app. People don’t open up about their mental health very easily and could not be telling you the truth of if they would really use the app or not. I think you did a great job and interviewed really good people who don’t actually have a need for the app, or a need for the app at this moment. Your inside and outside the boundary chart was done perfectly and I could tell you really thought through each part. Great job!!
Hi, Hayley! I am so surprised by your fourth interview! I guess your app is targeting a very specific audience, and thankfully, it is a large audience. There will always be outliers and people who don't believe in what you'e doing. I do, however, agree with Karry. It's a great alternative! I think the app is great, and I can see you did thorough research! Great job!
