My individual is an 18-year-old male from Peachtree City,
Georgia. He has kept to himself all his life and dealt with any issues he had
by himself. His family never brought up mental health. Although, many in his
family suffered with poor mental health, they saw mental health as a failure.
The family saw going to the doctor as defeat and ruining their pristine image.
He has
started his first year at the University of Florida. A new town. A new scene. He
is homesick and is having a hard time with depression. He does not feel he can
talk to his family. He also does not have any close friends, yet, that he can
talk with. The stress of all the assignments is really starting to take its
toll on him. He finds himself sleeping a lot and not leaving his dorm room.
He has
never really made his own doctors appointments and does not know about the
campus resources regarding what he is experiencing.

I am from the same city as my avatar and I am aware of how people
interact there. Mental health was never really talked about in my family
openly, but some did go to see a psychologist to get help. The problems were
not ignored. They were just not talked about with family.

ReplyDeleteVery interesting to see that you have chosen to make your avatar from PeachTree Georgia, as I myself grew up just a bit further North in Roswell! I think that the most key aspect of your avatar is that he has no experience making doctor's appointments. Most teenagers don't handle this and so the service you are creating will need to give them an easy way to get the help they need without difficulty.
